Overview (What is Form CTPS?)
#CTPS Digital replaced the physical work booklet for ordinary employment-record purposes. Employers submit admission, contract, pay, leave, and termination information through eSocial, and the worker views those records in the CTPS Digital app or Gov.br service.
For a foreign worker, four separate concepts must stay separate:
1. **Immigration permission:** a visa or residence authorization may permit paid work. CTPS Digital does not create that permission. 2. **Immigration registration:** Polícia Federal may register the person and issue RNM/CRNM. That is not CTPS issuance. 3. **CPF:** Receita Federal maintains the tax identifier. Anyone enrolled in CPF automatically has CTPS Digital. 4. **Employment records:** the employer reports the formal contract through eSocial for display in CTPS Digital.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment administers CTPS employment guidance. Polícia Federal does not adjudicate CTPS Digital and does not issue it as part of CRNM biometrics.
Context and workflow
#Gov.br lists the CTPS Digital service as free with immediate service. Employment data can take about 48 hours after the employer sends it through eSocial to appear; that is synchronization time, not an application-processing period.
Who uses it
Any Brazilian or foreign national enrolled in CPF already has a CTPS Digital record. A personal authenticated Gov.br account is needed to view it. Foreign workers separately need an immigration basis that permits the intended employment; CPF or CTPS alone does not make employment lawful.
When it is used
- To view a formal employment contract reported by an employer through eSocial
- To monitor current and historical employment records and related labour information
- To check whether the employer-reported role, admission date, pay, and other contract data are accurate
- To present CPF and date of birth to an employer for formal hiring records
Requirements snapshot
#- CPF enrolment automatically creates the CTPS Digital record.
- A personal Gov.br account provides digital access.
- The service is free and immediate.
- Employers submit and correct employment data through eSocial.
- Foreign work permission is a separate immigration question.
Evidence strategy (What evidence does Form CTPS require?)
#- Use the official Gov.br CTPS service for access and cost claims.
- Use MTE CTPS FAQs for eSocial records and correction procedures.
- Use Receita Federal guidance for CPF enrolment evidence.
- Use Polícia Federal or immigration-authority guidance only for separate immigration status and CRNM questions.
Failure prevention (What causes Form CTPS rejections?)
#Technical rejections
- Use a personal Gov.br account linked to the correct CPF.
- Correct underlying CPF civil data instead of creating a duplicate account.
Substantive weaknesses
- Confirm immigration permission to work separately from CTPS access.
- Ask the employer to correct current contract data through eSocial.
What it asks for (What does Form CTPS ask for?)
#- CPF number for Gov.br authentication
- Personal Gov.br account credentials
- No ordinary CTPS Digital document upload, signature, filing packet, or immigration evidence
What you need (What do you need for Form CTPS?)
#- A valid CPF enrolment
- An authenticated personal Gov.br account (Bronze, Silver, or Gold access is accepted by the service)
- The official Carteira de Trabalho Digital app or Gov.br web service
- Separate proof of immigration permission to work when applicable — this is not uploaded to obtain CTPS Digital
Checklist (What is the Form CTPS checklist?)
#- Confirm that your CPF civil data is current with Receita Federal.
- Create or access your personal Gov.br account using your CPF.
- Open the official “Obter a Carteira de Trabalho” service or Carteira de Trabalho Digital app.
- Sign in; do not search for a downloadable CTPS application form.
- Give the employer your CPF and date of birth so it can submit the employment record through eSocial.
- Check the contract after employer submission; MTE says data may take about 48 hours to appear.
- Ask the employer to correct current contract errors in eSocial. Update civil-data errors through Receita Federal and INSS as directed by MTE.
Fees
#CTPS Digital is free. Other CPF or immigration-service charges are separate and must not be presented as CTPS fees.
Common mistakes (What mistakes are common with Form CTPS?)
#- Treating CTPS Digital as a Federal Police immigration form or work permit
- Waiting for an approval, rejection notice, protocol number, or issuance queue that does not exist
- Paying a supposed CTPS filing or biometrics fee
- Assuming a CPF or CTPS record by itself authorizes a foreign national to work
- Uploading CRNM, passport, photographs, proof of address, or an employment contract to obtain ordinary CTPS Digital access
- Asking MTE to edit employer-submitted data instead of requesting an eSocial correction from the employer
Examples (What are examples for Form CTPS?)
#- A foreign worker already has a CPF and a residence status permitting employment. The employer submits admission through eSocial, and the contract appears in CTPS Digital after synchronization.
- A worker sees the wrong admission date for a current contract. The worker asks the employer to correct the eSocial event rather than filing a new CTPS application.
- A newly enrolled CPF holder opens CTPS Digital before starting a job. The record exists but shows only civil data because no employer has submitted employment history yet.
Common misconceptions (What misconceptions surround Form CTPS?)
#- “Foreign workers must apply for CTPS after receiving CRNM.” Ordinary CTPS Digital is automatically created from CPF; CRNM belongs to a separate immigration-registration process.
- “CTPS approval gives permission to work.” CTPS records employment but does not grant immigration status or work authorization.
- “CTPS requires PF biometrics.” Polícia Federal biometrics relate to immigration registration, not ordinary CTPS Digital access.
- “The app must be activated before hiring.” MTE states that an employer can register the contract in eSocial even if the worker has not opened the app.
- “A 48-hour display period is processing time.” It is an approximate data-synchronization period after employer submission, not an issuance SLA.
- CTPS has no separate filing fee, but it is not optional paperwork — failing to include it when required can delay or jeopardize the underlying case.
Verification
#Verified on 17 August 2026 against the official Gov.br CTPS service, Ministry of Labour CTPS Digital FAQs, Gov.br account guidance, and CPF service. CTPS facts are intentionally separated from Federal Police immigration registration and labour-residence authorization.
